Ford owns almost 3 percent of Mazda as of 2015. The company once owned over 30 percent and was Mazda's largest shareholder, but has been gradually reducing its holdings.
Because of the financial crisis in 2008 and in order to finance the company's expenditures, Ford drastically reduced its ownership percentage in Mazda from 33.4 percent first to 13 percent, then to 3 percent in 2010. Ford sold shares to Sumitomo Mitsui, Sumitomo Corporation and the suppliers of the automaker. The largest shareholder of Mazda is now Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group. Mazda benefits from being largely owned by a bank, which helps the company maintain its financial status.
