While people with a fear of germs are commonly referred to as germaphobes, mysophobia is actually the official medical term for this condition. Mysophobia is commonly found in individuals diagnosed with an anxiety disorder known as obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Symptoms of mysophobia are similar to the physical and mental responses associated with other anxiety disorders and may include nausea, shaking, a feeling of helplessness and labored breathing. These symptoms may occur when an individual is directly exposed to a dirt or bacteria, as well as instances when a person sees a filthy home on television or hears a loved one discussing germs.
