Hamsters are naturally omnivorous and consume a wide variety of vegetables, fruits, seeds and nuts. Some hamsters are also known to be insectivorous. Coprophagy is a common behavior among hamsters to consume nutrients that were not previously absorbed. Hamsters instinctively carry excess food in pouches surrounding their mouths. This is helpful in transporting large amounts of food back to the hamster's burrow.
