A baby brown recluse spider is a slightly lighter color than the adult of the species; the adult's color ranges from dull yellow to dark brown. There are no spots or stripes on the spider's abdomen.
A violin-shaped mark on the spider's dorsum is its most characteristic trait. This marking gave the brown recluse its nickname of "fiddle-back" spider. The presence of this marking and the spiders eyes are used to make a positive identification.
Brown recluse spiders live in dark places in basements, barns and homes. Its range is in the central southern United States from western Florida to Texas.
