Female polar bears are called sows. The male of the species is called a boar, and their young are called cubs. Male and female polar bears only interact during mating season.
Polar bears are the largest land carnivores. They have thick, white fur coats, and their skin is black. They have a layer of fat that stores energy and keeps them warm. Polar bears eat seals, walruses, narwhals, beluga whales, fish, reindeer and birds. They usually live 15 to 18 years, although some have lived for over 30 years. Only female polar bears hibernate, especially when they are pregnant. They give birth – usually to two cubs – while hibernating in their dens from November through January.
