How do geese mate?

Geese mate much like dogs; the male gander mounts the female from behind, after some gentle but aggressive pecking, and copulation ensues. A mating pair of geese may perform this act up to five times a day during the height of the breeding season.
When mating season is approaching, both male and female geese often dip their necks up and down. Males also preen, take dust baths, and spread and stretch their wings. The female goose eventually chooses her mate, and she makes her choice, the male goose becomes very protective of her and fights off any other interested males.
