How many toes does a camel have?

Camels have two toes on each leg, for a total of eight toes per camel. The toes of camels are made up of a single bone, called a cannon bone, that is split into halves at the base.
A hard nail surrounds each half of the cannon bone. Camels lack side digits; their entire foot is made up of the cannon bone and the soft tissue surrounding it. Although a single unit, the cannon bone is made up of two separate bones that fused together through evolution. The two fused bones are the equivalent of the middle and ring fingers on a human hand. Deer have a similar internal foot structure. However, camels have a great deal of additional padding in their feet to provide flexibility, traction and resistance to heat.
