According to LiveScience, male walruses can weigh as much as 3,700 pounds, with female walruses reaching about 2,700 pounds. In the pinniped family, the elephant seal is the only larger member.
The prominent tusks of the walrus are used in fighting, defense and climbing onto ice from the water. Each tusk can weigh up to 12 pounds. Walruses are carnivorous and prey on creatures of the shallow ice shelves, including fish, crabs and shrimp. Some walruses, however, prey on seals and even small whales. Polar bears and orcas are the only natural predators of the walrus. Walruses can hold their breath underwater for up to 30 minutes.
