What is the smartest dog breed?

While several dog breeds are regarded as more intelligent than others, the breed that receives the most votes in a survey of more than 120 veterinary professionals is the border collie. Praised as hardworking, energetic and willful when it comes to rounding up sheep, this breed is highly intelligent.

Other breeds that consistently land on lists of highly intelligent dog breeds include the German Shepherd, bloodhound, beagle, Labrador retriever, Newfoundland, Belgian Malinois, Siberian husky, golden retriever and Australian shepherd. This list, which includes the border collie, is compiled by the American Kennel Club. Many of these breeds produce working dogs.
