Where do squids live?

The largest quantity of squid species are found throughout the North Atlantic Ocean. The North Pacific is also home to a variety of squid types. The exact habitat of a squid depends on to which of the estimated 375 species the cephalopod belongs.
Squid are known to inhabit almost every major body of saltwater on the planet and even some bodies of freshwater. Many squid are adept at surviving in cold, oxygen-deprived waters deep below the surface.
The largest known squid species, the giant and colossal squid, are only found in the deep frigid waters in the Antarctic. Other species prefer the warmer or more shallow waters of tropic climates or coral reefs, such as those in Hawaii and the Gulf of Mexico.
