What does a water moccasin snake look like?

The water moccasin is a species of pit viper that features a muscular, stocky body between 2 and 4 feet in length and a large, triangular head. Its coloration varies but includes olive, banded brown and black. The underside of the water moccasin is paler than its backside.

The venom of the water moccasin is potentially fatal to humans although bites are rare. Natives of the Southeastern United States, water moccasins are semi-aquatic and can be found either on land or in streams, swamps or ponds. The diet of the water moccasin includes birds, fish and amphibians. Smaller water moccasins are sometimes the prey of larger ones.
