A rattlesnake can be identified by the hard, segmented rattle growth located at the tip of its tail. This rattle produces a buzzing sound when vibrated.
Adult rattlesnakes range in size from 1.6 to 6.6 feet in length. There are many different species of rattlesnakes, each with their own distinctive markings. Most species are characterized by distinctive markings in the shape of diamonds, hexagons or rhombus patterns formed by the scales along their backs. Many species also have nine large scales on the tops of their heads. Rattlesnakes are usually brown or gray, although some species display shades of green, orange or red.
