What is the pH of hand sanitizer?
By Forinfos - 21/05/2025 - 0 comments
The active ingredient in most hand sanitizers is ethyl alcohol, which has a pH of 7.0. Ethyl alcohol is also known as ethanol, which is a neutral molecule with the chemical formula H3CH2OH. For this reason, hand sanitizer is neither acidic nor alkaline.
Ethanol is used in a wide variety of applications besides hand sanitizer because of its properties as an effective solvent, fuel and antiseptic. It is also the psychoactive substance in many types of alcoholic beverages consumed for recreation where it is usually referred to as spirits. Ethanol is highly reactive and flammable, so it should be used with care in settings near active heat sources.
