What is a phlox subulata?

Phlox subulata, more commonly called moss phlox or creeping phlox, is a low-growing ground cover with pink, white, red or purple flowers. A perennial plant, phlox subulata is native to the eastern and central parts of the United States.

Phlox subulata grows to a height of 3 to 6 inches and spreads 1 to 2 feet. It requires full sun, moderate water and tolerates high temperatures. This phlox grows well in well-drained sandy soil.

The fragrant tubular flowers bloom in mid-spring, and stems need to be cut back halfway after flowering to promote denser growth. Phlox subulata self-seeds, which produces more plants the following spring, and may create a mat-like appearance if left unattended.
