One of the most prominent physical features of turkeys, both wild and domestic, males and females, is the wattle. This is a piece of red skin that hangs beneath a turkey's chin.

Turkeys have other distinctive features. Both sexes have a snood, which is a chunk of skin that protrudes from the beak. Caruncles are the skin bumps that cover a turkey's head and neck. Compared to other birds, a turkey's head is covered with very few feathers. Males have spurs on their legs. These spikes are used as offensive weapons during a fight. The outcropping of coarse feathers on a male's chest is called a "beard."
