New York's physical features include mountains, lakes, rivers and coastal lowlands. The wide variation of features provides a wide range of habitats for native plants and animals.

Mount Marcy is the highest point in New York with an elevation of 5,344 feet. The Adirondack Mountains are located in the northern part of the state and the surrounding area makes up the largest national park in the contiguous United States. The lowest part of the state includes the ares where New York meets the Atlantic ocean in the southeast.

New York's major rivers include the Hudson River, the Mohawk River and the Genesee River. Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, Lake Champlain and Lake George make up the state's series of lakes.
