Physical science involves several major fields of study centered on nonliving matter or physical properties. The most prominent areas of physical science include physics, chemistry, geology and astronomy. A primary goal of physical science is to understand how nonliving matter and energy in the universe impacts human existence.

Physical science has helped to develop understanding of the solar system and has led to the discovery of many stars and planets. Gravity, thermodynamics, sound waves and energy conservation are other significant topics studied by physical scientists.
