The pin oak tree, Quercus palustris, has a unique growing pattern. The top third of its branches grows upward, the middle third grows straight outwards and the bottom third grows downwards.
The pin oak tree grows to a height of 60 to 70 feet high with a spread 25 to 40 feet wide. This fast-growing tree grows well in full sun with wet soil. The pin oak grows in a pyramidal shape through maturity but changes to an oval shape as it ages.
Acorns produced by the pin oak are favored by deer, squirrels, ducks and wild turkeys. Pin oaks make great shade trees.
