What are pipeline maps?

Pipeline maps are documents that show the locations of industrial pipelines in a given area. Industrial pipelines carry volatile liquid substances such as crude or refined oil and natural gas. Maps display them separately from sewer lines and water mains.
Most major pipelines are located underground, though the facilities they connect are located above ground. The longest pipelines in North America extend for more than 1,000 miles, though most lines are much shorter. The National Pipeline Mapping System provides access to pipeline maps through its website. It is important to consult these maps before starting a major construction or digging project.
