According to Mayo Clinic, the HPV strains that cause plantar warts are not highly contagious. Plantar warts occur on the outer layer of skin on the soles of feet.

According to Mayo Clinic, there are over 100 different strains of HPV. However, only a few of these strains cause warts on feet. Each person's immune system has a different reaction to HPV, even people within the same family. HPV is not easily transmitted from person to person by direct contact. HPV flourishes in warm, damp environments, and it requires an entry point into the skin of the foot, such as through cracked, dry skin, cuts, or fragile, saturated skin from long exposure to water.
