What plants live in the ocean?

The different plant species that live in the ocean include phytoplankton, diatoms, dinoflagellates, sea-grasses, kelp and algae. These plants have special adaptation features that help them survive in the water.

Plants are at the bottom of any food chain and the ocean food chain is not an exception. The various types of plants make life in the ocean possible.

• Phytoplanktons - these are plants that are made up of one cell and help in balancing the carbon cycle. They also act as a source of nutrients for marine animals that feed on them.
• Dinoflagellates - just like other plants, dinoflagellates are able to make their own food through photosynthesis. While they may sometimes have a toxic effect on marine life, they help stabilize the carbon cycle and act as food for some animals.
• Diatoms - these are unique organisms since they are able to survive in both freshwater and salty water. They reproduce by dividing into two parts which further divide and so forth.
• Sea-grasses - these plants are able to thrive under water because of certain special features. They are most commonly found in shallow waters.
• Kelp - these organisms are characterized by a brown color and are categorized under algae.
• Algae - there are various species of algae that can be found in almost all oceans across the globe.
