Where do platypuses live?

Platypuses live along the eastern coast of Australia. These carnivorous mammals are found in the water when they are looking for food, and they also spend time on the ground. Platypuses build their homes out of dirt near the shore.

Platypuses are over a foot in length, and they weigh about three pounds. These mammals share some features with otters, ducks and beavers. However, platypuses differ from these animals in that the males have stingers located on their hind feet. Platypuses are different from most other mammals in that they lay eggs. Females typically lay no more than two eggs at a time, and the baby platypuses emerge from the eggs in roughly 10 days.
