Plum Island is an island in the Town of Southold in Suffolk County, New York. The Island is situated in Gardiners Bay, less than a mile east of Orient Point; this is off the eastern end of the North Fork coast of Long Island.
Plum Island is an 840-acre, pork chop-shaped island which is about 3 miles long and 1 mile wide at its widest point. Approximately 90 percent of Plum Island's land is undeveloped, as of 2014. The island is the location of the Plum Island Animal Disease Center (“PIADCâ€), where, according to the USDA, scientists study diseases that can affect livestock, with a particular focus on the foot-and-mouth disease virus.
