According to Everyday Health, the rash from poison ivy and the fluid in the blisters is not contagious. The oils from the plant can spread onto clothing, shoes or any item that was touched by the oils.
Everyday Health explains that poison ivy can be spread to other people by items contaminated with poison ivy oils. Wash all the contaminated items with hot, soapy water to prevent further spreading. A poison ivy rash lasts one to two weeks. An oral antihistamine, such as Benadryl, can be used to treat the itchiness from the rash. For topical treatment, hydrocortisone cream can be applied to the rash.
