What are "police medals"?

Police medals are similar to those that are given out for military service in that they are given to an officer that completes a particular task that goes above and beyond the call of duty. Each department may have different medals, but all have the intention of honoring the officer.

The San Jose Police Department, for example, has medals for valor, honor, life saving and hazardous tasks. According to Wikipedia, the New York City Police Department has a combat cross and a purple shield in addition to medals for valor, honor and more. Each police department can create the medal categories that best suit its department, and there are companies that will customize them for the department.
