Who are the political elite?

The political elite are the most informed, educated and politically active people who have a strong influence on public officials. Throughout the United States, about 7 to 9 percent of adults fall under the category of the political elite.

In general, the political elite have at least a 4-year college degree and earn a minimum of $80,000 per year. They tend to be high-level professionals or have high socioeconomic jobs as company presidents and owners. They are politically active in their communities and they spend time contacting elected officials. The political elite may also hold elective office, serve on policy committees or write political articles.
