Polyamides take on a variety of useful forms in a diverse range of manufactured items. Some of the key uses of polyamides are in the creation of clothing, carpeting and vehicle air bags. Polyamides are also extensively used in the production of plastics for car interiors and food packaging.

The first polyamide was developed in 1935 in a DuPont company laboratory by W.H. Carothers. Commercial production of polyamide materials began in the United States in 1938.
