What is a polyp found in colonoscopy?

A colon polyp is a clump of cells that is attached to the colon lining, according to the Mayo Clinic. Many polyps are benign, or non-cancerous. If not removed, however, some can become cancerous.

Types of polyps include adenomatous, serrated and inflammatory; each has different characteristics. Anyone can get polyps, but there are some factors that increase the risk. Family history, age, obesity and unhealthy habits, such as smoking, contribute to the likelihood of developing polyps. Regular colonoscopy screening is recommended for everyone, but especially for anyone with risk factors. When found early, polyps can usually be safely and easily removed, notes the Mayo Clinic.
