The remains of Pompeii are located 14 miles from Naples, in the Italian region of Campania. The ancient city of Pompeii lays at the southeastern base of Mount Vesuvius before its eruption.
The destruction of Pompeii occurred in 79 A.D. Other communities that were destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius included Herculaneum, Stabiae and Torre Annunziata. The circumstances of the eruption and of how these communities perished led to the preservation of these sites, allowing an unparalleled glimpse into Greco-Roman history. In 1997, UNESCO declared Pompeii and its surrounding communities a collective World Heritage Site. When Pompeii was destroyed, it was home to between 10,000 to 20,000 inhabitants.
