In the Victorian era, many women wore trimmed bonnets with flowers, ribbons and frills. Wide-brimmed bonnets were popular, and many wore bird feathers or actual birds in them as an ornament.

Victorian women also wore informal caps when they were indoors. These were called day, morning or breakfast caps. When in mourning, women often wore a black lace hat with a scalloped border that was trimmed with black ribbon and had a black bow centered in the back.

Whatever the occasion, Victorian hats made a statement and were often considered works of art. Women often competed to have the most outrageously extravagant one.
