The countries of West Africa have a population of 245 million. According to the World Bank, 65 percent of the population are living in rural areas.

West Africa consists of 15 nations. These are Togo, Sierra Leone, Senegal, Niger, Mali, Liberia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Ghana, Gambia, Cote d'lvoire, Cape Verde, Burkina Faso and Benin. The population of West Africa has been growing by 2.2 percent over the past three years, while the economic growth has averaged only 2.5 percent. It is believed by the World Bank that an economic growth of around 6 to 7 percent per year is required in order for the region to cut poverty in half by 2015.
