Most cases of infantile epilepsy occur as a result of brain injury or a brain disorder, explains the Epilepsy Foundation. This condition has no association with the baby's sex or family history. It is uncommon and has a tendency to occur just after waking up.

Infantile epilepsy begins in babies between 3 and 12 months of age and usually clears up when a child gets to 2 to 4 years old, explains Epilepsy Foundation. Babies suffering from this condition tend to stop growing, and some mastered skills, such as babbling and sitting, may get lost. Also known as West syndrome, infantile epilepsy causes an abrupt jerk accompanied by stiffening.
