A power chain for braces is a row of connected rubber O-rings, resembling a chain, that pulls the teeth closer together, states Paul S. Burkey, DDS. Each ring encircles one bracket of the braces, creating tension in the chain. The teeth move along the archwire, reducing the spaces between them.

Orthodontists change the power chains at each dental appointment, notes Dr. Burkey. Other parts of the braces include brackets cemented to the teeth, bands that fit around the patient's back teeth, and archwire that connects the bands and brackets. Small rubber bands, called elastics, stretch from brackets to bands, providing more force to move the teeth.
