Is power steering failure a common problem with Ford Escapes?

Power steering failure is a common problem in Ford Escape, Ford Explorer and Mercury Mariner vehicle models. The problem is so widespread that Ford issued a recall for more than a million vehicles for repairs.
In May of 2014, Ford recalled almost 200,000 Ford Escapes from model years 2008 to 2011. The issue is connected to a problem with the torque sensor, which is located in the steering column of the recalled Escapes. This can lead to a loss of electrical power in the steering process when driving. If this occurs, the car automatically defaults to manual steering, which makes the vehicle more difficult to control, especially when driving at a low speed.
