PPE stands for personal protective equipment, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Health & Safety Administration. PPE includes safety glasses, hearing protection, hard hats, respirators, coveralls, vests, full body suits and protective shoes.
Employers are mandated to require the use of PPE for duties where it is reasonably considered necessary, according to OSHA. Employers must provide personal protective equipment to their workers and ensure that it is used properly. Employers are required to train workers on what kind of PPE to use and when, how to wear and remove it, how to adjust it and its limitations. OSHA also requires employers to train workers on the proper care, maintenance, useful life and disposal of PPE.
