The Michigan License Plate Factory produces around 8,000 plates each day, manufactured by inmates from the Gus Harrison Correctional Facility. In New Jersey, inmates manufacture over 1 million license plates each year and are paid less than $1 per hour for their labor. Indiana transferred license plate production to an outside vendor, Intellectual Technology Inc., in order to reduce manufacturing costs, according to TheStatehouseFile.com.
