Wrigley's Juicy Fruit gum is the first product to receive the UPC bar code stamp. The 10-pack of gum was scanned at a Marsh supermarket in Troy, Ohio on June 26, 1974.
While bar coding was initially used commercially in 1966, the UPC symbol was not implemented as the industry standard until 1973. The design, which was proposed by IBM, was chosen by the selection committee formed along with the grocery industry. It was based on the Universal Grocery Products Identification Code which was developed in 1970, by Logicon Inc. George J. Laurer is credited as the inventor of the UPC.
