To program a LiftMaster remote control, first locate the "Learn" button — it comes in a variety of colors. Press and release the Learn button; the user then has approximately 30 seconds to press and hold the button on the remote control.

The Learn button on a garage door opener is usually on the back or side of the motor unit. If it is a gate or commercial operator, the button can be found on the control board. When programming a LiftMaster 8500 or 8500C, the Learn button must be pressed twice. If the process fails the first time, repeat the steps.
