How do I reprogram my garage door keypad?

If you are a new home owner, changing the code that will open your garage door increases your home security. The process takes just a few minutes and is similar on most standard units, but it does require a ladder to access the switch.
- Make initial preparations
Back the car out of the garage and place the ladder under the garage door opener unit. Check the keypad to ensure a battery is in place and working.
- Reset the unit
Climb the ladder and locate the "learn" button on the back of the unit. It is usually red or blue. Press the button and hold it in place for several seconds until the light on the unit goes out, or it makes a clicking noise. Release the button. At this point, the unit has erased all codes stored in the device.
- Set the new code
Depress the button a second time. A small LED light should illuminate. Quickly move to the keypad and enter the new code. Most openers give you about 30 seconds to complete this task.
- Synchronize the remote
Resetting the code affects the remote. Climb back up the ladder with the remote. Hold it near the back of the unit. Press the button on the remote and the learn button on the unit. Release both at the same time. Press the button on the remote, and the garage door should trigger.
