The recommended dietary allowance of magnesium varies from 65 milligrams to 420 milligrams, based on age, gender, some biological conditions and the source. People can safely get higher levels of magnesium from food sources, but toxicity can result from getting too much magnesium from supplements.

From one to three years old, children need up to 80 milligrams a day, and ages four to eight need up to 130 milligrams a day. From nine to 13, the RDA is 240 milligrams a day. From age 14 on, RDA values differ for males, females in general and for pregnant and nursing females.

The RDA of magnesium for males and females drops slightly between ages 19 to 31, such 310 milligrams to 360 milligrams for females and 400 milligrams for males. Excessive amounts of magnesium may result in nausea, diarrhea, cramps and even death.
