What is a pseudo intellectual?

A pseudo intellectual is a person who wishes to appear smarter or more scholarly than their education or knowledge actually supports. Pseudo intellectuals often show interest in topics that they have little understanding or information about in order to elevate their status with other people or groups.

The term is often used in a derogatory way. The pseudo intellectual is often seen as performing a little research to find quotes or statistics that support his claims or comments, but much of what is offered is out of date or irrelevant to the topic at hand. The counter opinion is that pseudo intellectuals offer valid opinions that come without the restrictions of structured education and formal teaching.
