Are public payphones still available?

As of 2015, there are less than 500,000 public payphones in the United States. Payphones process approximately 1.7 billion calls per year. Payphones are particularly useful for the 14 million Americans that do not have home phone service and the 140 million that do not have cellphones.

The United States is home to over 1,700 payphone companies. Payphone providers usually charge 25 cents or 50 cents for a local call. Some providers charge as low as 10 cents. Normally, the least expensive way to make a long-distance call from a payphone is to use coins. Payphones do not normally provide change.
