Legend has it that Punxsutawney Phil, a Pennsylvania groundhog used in an annual ceremony held on Feb. 2, is able to predict the arrival of spring. But he has only been right 39 percent of the time, according to LiveScience.
The legend states that if Punxsutawney Phil does not see his shadow during the ceremony, there will be an early spring. Phil and his predecessors have been forecasting the weather since 1887, according to LiveScience. In the past 120 years, Punxsutawney's famous groundhog has been accurate with his predictions of an early spring only 47 percent of the time, with an overall rate of successful forecasts falling to less than 40 percent.
