Do puppies sleep a lot?

Like human babies, puppies tend to sleep a lot. Growth and development takes a great deal of their energy, and in the first couple of weeks, puppies sleep about 90 percent of the time.
During the time when they are not asleep, they are fed by their mother. Their eyes are shut for the first week or two as well. As time passes and the puppies are able to see, hear, stand and interact with the world, they begin to sleep a bit less and play more. Pet owners benefit from putting their puppies on schedules as soon as possible to regulate sleep and other behaviors. It is important to remember that although puppies seem to have boundless energy, they are still growing and require adequate rest.
