What is the purpose of basement floor drains?

Basement floor drains have a direct connection to a home's sewage line and allow water to drain out of the house if it begins to flood. Basement floor drains enable standing water to drain out efficiently.
Many pipes run through a home's basement, and other appliances that use a great deal of water, such as washing machines and water heaters, are also often located there. If they malfunction, these pipes and appliances have the possibility to release large amounts of water, but a basement drain allows water to flow out easily. Basement drains are always located in the lowest part of the basement, where the floor slopes down, to allow water to flow down the drain properly.
