What is the purpose of a weights of building material chart?

A weights of building materials chart helps engineers design the supporting structure for the building. A building's weight is divided into live loads that vary based on the people and equipment contained inside and fixed dead loads that only include building materials such as concrete, drywall and lumber.
The engineer must calculate the amount of each material used in construction and multiply that total by the per unit weight listed on the chart. For example, if a slate roof has a listed weight of 10 pounds per square foot, then a roof covering 5,000 square feet would weigh 50,000 pounds.
