To put out a grease fire, get everyone out of the building, call 9-1-1, try to smother the fire, and use a dry-chemical fire extinguisher. If the grease fire spreads to your clothes, drop to the ground, and roll. Do not try to put out a grease fire with water.
- Evacuate the building
A grease fire may spread quickly. Before fighting the fire, ensure everyone is safely out of the building.
- Call for help
Call 9-1-1 to enlist the help of the local fire department. You may get the fire out before they get there, but the fire department should still come to the scene.
- Smother the fire with a pan lid
If the fire is small enough, smother it with the lid of a pan. Do not use a glass lid because the extreme heat may cause it to shatter.
- Sprinkle the fire with baking soda
Sprinkle the fire with a baking soda. This usually only works for small fires because it takes a lot of baking soda to successfully put out a fire.
- Use a fire extinguisher
Use a dry-chemical fire extinguisher to fight the fire. This should be a last resort because of kitchen and food contamination. Dry-chemical fire extinguishers are found in most commercial kitchens.
