A deck of playing cards is placed and cut on a table but never eaten, according to Riddles.com. The origin of playing cards is uncertain because of a lack of available archaeological samples.
Although playing cards can be traced to India, Persia and Egypt, many experts state playing cards originated in China as early as the thirteenth century. While American versions of playing cards include kings, queens, jacks and aces, earlier European versions did not include queens opting for marshalls in countries with male-dominated courts. These versions still circulate in Italian, Spanish and German forms. The traditional American red and black suit colors originated in France in the fifteenth century.
