What is a PVC pipe lightsaber?

A PVC pipe lightsaber is a homemade prop based off of the energy swords found in the Star Wars Universe. The material used for the blade is painted PVC pipe fit onto a handle.

The original lightsaber, first seen in "Star Wars: A New Hope," was made using wooden dowels and reflective paint, so that the sword would appear to be glowing when light was shone on it. Unfortunately, the designers found out that the sword's radiance was very dependant on the angle of the sword from the camera and lights, so the sound and light effects had to be added afterwards by tracing the images of the sword on the film and adding the special effects.
