Per the U.S. Constitution, an individual who is at least 30 years old, a U.S. citizen for nine years at the time of election and a resident of the state he plans to represent is qualified to be a Senator. There are no other legal requirements to become a Senator.
The U.S. Senate is the higher of two legislative chambers making up the U.S. legislative body. The House of Representatives is the lower of the two legislative bodies. The United States has 100 Senators, each of whom serve six-year terms of service for the state they are elected to represent.
